ABRASIVE WHEELS REGULATIONS

Purpose of Course:
To raise the trainee’s knowledge of grinding wheels regulations and be able to safely change a grinding wheel on a hand held grinder, change a wheel on a bench or Pedestal grinder Dress a wheel true and flat
On completion of the course the trainees name is entered on to the grinding wheels register

Designed for
Persons requiring to use a grinder in their work and under Provision and use of equipment Regulation (PUWER 86) requires formal training and certification

Pre-requisites
None

Learning Objectives
Part 1. Safety Awareness Session Covering:

Hazards arising from the use of abrasive wheels. (Noise-Dust-Eyes-Vibration-Sparks)
Marking of Abrasive Wheels.
Storage-Handling-Transporting-Inspecting & Testing of Abrasive Wheels.
The function of all main components. (Flanges-Washers-Bushes & Nuts)

Part 2. Pre-start Checks - (Electrically Powered) Bench Mounted Grinding Machine:
Dressing wheels (Bench Machines).
Rest adjustment (Bench Machines)
Wiring - Plug - Guards - Spindle speed marked on machine
Grinding wheel undamaged & correct type
Tool rest as close as practicable to grinding face - Area free from debris.

Part 3. Pre-start Checks - (Electrically Powered) Hand Held Grinding/Cutting-Off Machine:
Wiring - Plug - Guards – Spindle Speed Marked on Machine
Grinding /Wheel undamaged & correct type
Wheel not fitted too tight
Correct eye protector available

Part 4. Pre-start Checks - (Petrol Driven) Cutting off machine:
Drive belt tension
Guard (Free from Abrasive Particles & Dust)
Flange wear/distortion
Fuel mixture (Stored in suitable container.)
Spindle speed marked on machine
Wheel not fitted too tight.

Part 5. Inspected Wheels / Discs before use:
Cracks - Damage - Blotters - Speed - Size- Correct type for Job

Part 6 Correctly changed grinding wheel/Disc

Part 8. Correctly dressed a Grinding Wheel
Bench mounted machines ONLY
